Why you can't just ask ChatGPT whether it recommends you

Asking ChatGPT about your own brand gives one answer from one account. Here is why that is not what buyers see, what to do instead, and a free way to check.

In short

  • Asking ChatGPT once tells you what it said to you, not what it says to a buyer. Your history, memory and location shape the answer.
  • The same question gives a different list each time, so one answer is one draw. A count needs many answers.
  • Doing this properly means many questions, many AI tools and every day. A free scan covers the first step.

The first thing most people do when they wonder whether AI recommends them is open ChatGPT and ask. It is a sensible start, and it is also quietly misleading. This post explains why, and what a trustworthy answer looks like.

Your ChatGPT is not your buyer's

What you see is shaped by your chat history, its memory of you and where you are. A buyer starts clean. We ask with no one's history and from the country you choose, so the answer is the one a stranger there would get.

The practical effect is that a brand you know well may look more visible to you than to a stranger, simply because the assistant has seen you ask about it before.

One answer is one draw

Ask the same question twice and the list of brands changes. SparkToro's testing found a very low chance of the same list appearing twice. A single answer, however convincing, is one draw from many, so a count needs many answers.

You can see this yourself. Ask the same buying question three times and compare the lists. Our free scan does exactly that on ChatGPT and Google AI, and its report shows how many brands each answer named and which brands appeared in all of them. Where the answers differ, a single check would have told you something different each time.

What a count needs

To say how often a brand is named you need many answers to the same question. With only a handful, a result is an early read, not a measurement. That is why the free scan shows counts such as 2 of 5 answers rather than a percentage, and why a percentage appears only when enough answers back it. The rules are on the methodology page.

It is six tools, every question, every day

Forty-five questions on six AI tools, checked daily, is 8,100 answers a month. Nobody does that by hand. We do, store each answer, and chart the trend.

When asking yourself is enough

For one question and a quick look, asking a few times is a fair start. It stops working when you want a trend, several AI tools, or a number you can show a client. At that point you need a tool, and the best AI visibility tools in 2026 compares the options.

What to do next

  1. Run the free scan for the question your buyers ask, from the country that matters.
  2. Read the answers themselves, not only the count. The report shows each one with your brand highlighted.
  3. If you want to track it, $69 a month covers every AI tool, every day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just ask ChatGPT if it recommends my brand?

You can, but one answer from your own account is not what a buyer sees. Your history, memory and location shape it, and the same question gives a different list each time.

How many times should I ask?

As many as you can. A handful of answers is an early read. Counting how often a brand is named needs many answers, which is why daily tracking exists.

Is there a free way to check?

Yes. The Slynnk free scan asks ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews your question several times and shows each answer with your brand highlighted.
